Step-by-Step Installation Instructions
This guide will walk you through installing and configuring TweetCraft 2.0.

Step 0: Users with TweetCraft 1.0 or 1.1 Already Installed
Run the TweetCraft 2.0 installer and it will automatically update TweetCraft 1.0. Alternatively, uninstall TweetCraft 1.0 or 1.1 (Add/Remove Programs) and install TweetCraft 2.0 as described below.

Step 1: Download and Extract the zip file
The first thing you'll want to do is download TweetCraft if you haven't already. After accepting the license, you should be prompted to save TweetCraft.zip to a location on your hard drive.

Step 2: Begin Installation
Click "setup.exe" to begin installing TweetCraft. You should see the image below.

Step 3: Agree to the License
Next is the End User license agreement. Click "Install" to begin the installation process.

Step 6 Installation and pre-requisites
TweetCraft will examine your machine and prompt you to download any missing pre-requisites it needs that may not be installed on your PC, most notably, the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 .

If your PC does not have all pre-requisites installed, you will be prompted to download and install them. Installing pre-reqs can be time consuming based on a number of factors including your processor, your network connection, and your hard drive speed. The pre-reqs could take 20 minutes or more to install, so please let the installer run if pre-reqs are required.

Vista/Windows 7 users with User Account Control (UAC) enabled will receive a UAC prompt when installing TweetCraft. This is expected during installation as TweetCraft must read the registry key to determine the location of your World of Warcraft installation to read/write Tweets and the TweetCraft AddOn.

Step 7 Done
At this point, the installation is done, click the checkbox to launch TweetCraft which will keep TweetCraft running in your system tray.

Note: You must have the TweetCraft client installed and running to send and receive Tweets.

Configuring TweetCraft
Right click on the TC icon in your system tray to bring up the TweetCraft settings context menu. From here you can open Twitter, World of Warcraft, and configure TweetCraft. Click the "TweetCraft Settings" option to configure TweetCraft.

Twitter Credentials
From here, type in your Twitter user name, password, and the World of Warcraft account you want Tweets sent to. After adding your credentials click "Apply" and TweetCraft will attempt to authenticate your credentials with Twitter.

If you are authenticated, you will receive the message "Twitter account is valid"

If you are not authenticated, you will receive the messsage "Invalid user name or password."

By default, TweetCraft will AutoTweet any screenshots in-game (either by clicking "Print Screen" or clicking the Screenshot button in TweetCraft). If you want to turn this off, uncheck the AutoTweet Screenshots checkbox.

Once complete, click "OK" to close the TweetCraft Settings window.

TweetCraft is now setup and configured!
You can now startup World of Warcraft and you should see the TweetCraft addon on your minimap (hint: you can also open TweetCraft by typing "/tweetcraft")

Updated Wiki: Curse users click here!

Frequently Asked Questions | Step-by-Step Installation Instructions | In-Game Help | Known Issues | Extending TweetCraft

TweetCraft Frequently Asked Questions

What is TweetCraft?
TweetCraft is an in-game Twitter client for World of Warcraft. TweetCraft allows you to send/receive Tweets in-game, upload in-game screenshots and AutoTweet achievements.

Is TweetCraft open source?
Yes, and TweetCraft's code uses the OSI-compliant Microsoft Public License.

Why would I want to use TweetCraft?

Keep up with what friends are doing on Twitter

Notify friends that you're playing Warcraft

Use Twitter to fill your raids

Send screenshots for boss kills, PVP, etc

Brag about achievements you've hit in-game

I'm a noob, how do I get started?
Check out the Step-by-Step Installation Instructions

How does TweetCraft work?
Similar to other applications and AddOns that send/receivegame information to the Web, TweetCraft works by monitoring two folders where World of Warcraft is installed:

Saved Variables - It monitors the Saved Variables folder, specifically the "$InstallPath$/WTF/Account/AccountNameGoesHere/SavedVariables/TweetCraft.lua" file to send and receive messages from Twitter into and out of Warcraft.

Screenshots - It monitors the Screenshots folder, specifically the "$InstallPath$/Screenshots" folder to send screenshots using the TwitPic service.

When I click the Send or Refresh buttons it causes the UI to reload. Is that required?
Yes, that is the only way for data from Warcraft to be sent outside the game is by using the Saved Variables folder.

Why does sending screenshots not require the UI to reload?
Because screenshots are saved instantly to the Screenshots folder as they happen.

Is this a violation of World of Warcraft's Terms of Use or the new AddOn policies?
As far as we know, no. We do not do any internal memory reading or other hacks to the Warcraft client. You could argue that it's possible to follow a Twitter user that would add advertising in-game which would violate the addon policy for in-game advertising, but the onus is on the user of TweetCraft to ensure the people they friend don't write messages (Tweets) that violate Warcraft's AddOn policy. In short, it's up to each person to ensure they're following Warcraft's terms of use.

How are my Twitter credentials stored?
TweetCraft uses the data protection API (DPAPI) to encrypt/decrypt your Twitter credential information when stored. TweetCraft does not use your Twitter credentials beyond authenticating to the Twitter service.

Can I configure what Tweets are sent via Twitter?
Yes, you can turn off sending screenshots to Twitter via the TweetCraft Settings. For AutoTweets, you configure TweetCraft like you would any normal AddOn, by clicking escape...Interface...AddOn to bring up the TweetCraft Options tab.

Why do you need my account name?
Since World of Warcraft uses your account name to create the folder where you store saved variables, your account name is needed to know the file path to write the saved variables information. The saved variables path is at the following location: "$InstallPath$/WTF/Account/AccountNameGoesHere/SavedVariables/TweetCraft.lua". Without this, TweetCraft wouldn't know where to find the saved variables. Your account name is not used beyond building the correct file path for reading/updating saved variables.

How do I know this is safe?
Security is never bullet-proof, but we have tried to ensure TweetCraft doesn't do bad things and doesn't allow malicious Tweets to do bad things to your PC. The source code and unit tests for the application are available for anyone to download. Security suggestions and recommendations are always welcome.

Why does TweetCraft prompt me with a UAC dialog when it's installing?
The reason is that we need to go to the registry to find the World of Warcraft registry key that includes the installation path for World of Warcraft. The key is called InstallPath and it's located in HKLM/Software/Blizzard Entertainment/World of Warcraft.

Is there a way to update Facebook?
You can install Facebook applications like Twitter that will automatically update your Facebook status with your Twitter status messages. Blizzard Entertainment has also made an official World of Warcraft Facebook application that works just like TweetCraft's AutoTweet feature.

The installation seems to be taking a long time, is that normal?
It depends on what system requirements you already have on your PC. TweetCraft requires the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to work, so if it isn't installed, TweetCraft will download the required pieces and install them.

What should I do if something isn't working?
Please visit the Known Issues page or the Issue Tracker for support issues.

Is there a way to change the AutoTweet messages used by TweetCraft?
Yes, although if the TweetCraft addon is updated again, you would have to manually update these changes. To do this, go to your Warcraft installation directory: World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\TweetCraft\AutoTweets\ folder. Inside, you should see a list of Lua files for tweets that have been registered (by default this would be Achievements.lua and Movement.lua). Open these files and search for "#wow" which is the default hashtag for the message being sent and customize this to your heart's content.

Updated Wiki: Extending TweetCraft

Curse users click here! | Frequently Asked Questions | Step-by-Step Installation Instructions | In-Game Help | Known Issues | Extending TweetCraft

Extending TweetCraft Overview
Adding additional AutoTweet sources is easy! If you have an event that you want to let the whole world know about, all you have to do is follow these two simple steps and you'll be able to queue up an AutoTweet in response to anything you want.

Note: This article assumes you know a bit about addon programming for World of Warcraft. If you're a complete newbie, check out some of the great resources around the web like the WoW UI Forums and the great World of Warcraft Programming book and their web site.

Stand Alone AutoTweet Addons
The first kind of AutoTweet addon you can create is a stand alone add on whose sole purpose is to send AutoTweets. This is a great way to get started sending AutoTweets. You can download the sample addon we'll create here in the Downloads section and you can also get a template addon that has a TOC file with the right dependencies set and a LUA file with some stock code to get you started. You can get the files from TweetCraft 1.0.

For our example, we'll be writing a mod that sends an autotweet at the end of a battleground match indicating both wins and losses. You can start with the completed addon and follow along or grab the template and code it up yourself as we go.

Step 1 - Register your addon with TweetCraft
The first (and probably easiest) part of writing your mod is to register yourself with TweetCraft. Open up your LUA file and take a look at the first few lines:

-- Get a reference to the library
local LibTweetCraft = LibStub:GetLibrary("LibTweetCraft-1.0")

TweetCraft uses a mod called LibStub to load libraries. This first line gets you a handle to LibTweetCraft which is the way you can begin to communicate with TweetCraft.

First, let's tell TweetCraft who we are and what we want to do.

-- Register our autotweet source
local AddOn = LibTweetCraft:RegisterAutoTweetAddOn("Battlegrounds", "Sends tweets related to Battlegrounds")

The RegisterAutoTweetAddOn takes one required parameter and two optional. The first is the name of the addon. This will be used in lots of places but the main one you'll see is the options UI. The second tells is a description of the addon which will be shown as the tooltip for your checkbox in the interface options. Finally, you can also pass a boolean value to indicate if you want the addon to be enabled by default. The user can override your setting but this allows you to turn an addon that may be a bit chatty off unless the user wants it.

This function also returns an important object: your addon. This is the primary way you'll communicate with TweetCraft from now on. You'll customize your registration here and also use it to send tweets. But before we send anything, lets add some categories of autotweets. We'll keep it simple and go with one for winning a battleground and one for losing.

-- Define our autotweet categories
BATTLEGROUNDTWEETS_WIN = "Win"
BATTLEGROUNDTWEETS_LOSE = "Lose"

-- Register our autotweet categories with tweetcraft
AddOn:AddCategory(BATTLEGROUNDTWEETS_WIN, "Win a battleground", "Automatically tweets when you win. Go you!")
AddOn:AddCategory(BATTLEGROUNDTWEETS_LOSE, "Lose a battleground", "Automatically tweets when you lose. Don't hide your shame!")

AddCategory takes 3 required arguments and one optional one.

The first is the name of your category. This is passed to TweetCraft whenever you want to send a tweet. It's never seen by the user but it's very important to your code as it allows TweetCraft to determine if it should send the tweet based on the users options. That's why we've created some constants for it; you'll need them later.

The second is the display name of your category. It's used in the options panel for the label of the checkbox. The third, the description, is also used by the options panel to provide the tooltip. Finally, just like the addon registration, you can pass a boolean to configure if the category should be enabled or disabled by default.

If you stopped here, you'd have everything registered with TweetCraft (even though you're not sending tweets yet). If you load up WoW after you've installed your AddOn, you should see the following in your options panel:

Step 2 - Send Tweets

Now comes the tricky part: hooking up to a WoW event and sending tweets in response. First, let's wire up the event

AddOn.EventHandler:RegisterEvent("UPDATE_BATTLEFIELD_STATUS")

TweetCraft provides you with a simple way to register events so you don't have to go to the trouble of creating your own Frame. We'll be looking for the UPDATE_BATTLEFIELD_STATUS event which fires for many reasons but the one we're concerned with is the end of a battleground. To handle this event, we define a function on our AddOn object's EventHandler with the same name as the event:

-- Handle the update event
function AddOn.EventHandler:UPDATE_BATTLEFIELD_STATUS(...)

end

This function will get called every time the event is fired by the game. Now, time to flesh it out. Since this is more about sending autotweets than the finer points of the battlegrounds APIs, I'll just toss the whole thing in for you.

-- Handle the update event
function AddOn.EventHandler:UPDATE_BATTLEFIELD_STATUS(...)
	local winner = GetBattlefieldWinner()
	if winner ~= nil then
 for index=1, MAX_BATTLEFIELD_QUEUES do
 local status, map, _ = GetBattlefieldStatus(index)
 if status == "active" then
 local playerFaction, _ = UnitFactionGroup("player")
 local playerName = UnitName("player")
if playerFaction == "Alliance" and winner == 1 or playerFaction == "Horde" and winner == 0 then
 -- Send victory tweet
 AddOn:Tweet(BATTLEGROUNDTWEETS_WIN, playerName .. " has won " .. map)
 else
 -- Send loss tweet
 AddOn:Tweet(BATTLEGROUNDTWEETS_LOSE, playerName .. " has lost " .. map)
 end
 end
 end
	end
end

We get the winner of the battleground via GetBattleFieldWinner() it returns 1 for Alliance, 0 for Horde, and nil for "no winner yet". As long as we have a winner, we get the battleground that is currently active (since you can queue for lots at once) and grab the name of the map we're on. We grab the player name and their faction and if they match the winning faction we send a victory tweet and if they don't we send a losing tweet.

The Tweet method takes two parameters. The first is the category of tweet we're sending. This allows TweetCraft to supress the tweet if the user has turned off that category. The second is the message itself. We build that up here using the player's name and the map they won or lost. It's as simple as that!

Now that you've got it working, log in and hit a battleground to mix it up. I did and I have to say it went pretty well. You might even say I got a bit carried away infact. Win or lose, you should see a message to your chat window letting you know there's an autotweet as well as a tweet in your Outgoing window in the main TweetCraft UI.

Congratulations, you've extended TweetCraft!

Have you got a cool addon that you've written? Autotweets for boss kills? Looting epics? Arena matches?

Have questions, suggestions, or bug reports?

Let us know in the comments below!

Updated Wiki: Known Issues

Curse users click here! | Frequently Asked Questions | Step-by-Step Installation Instructions | In-Game Help | Known Issues | Extending TweetCraft

Known Issues

If you are having trouble running the TweetCraft application, (ex: "TweetCraft has stopped working" errors) download/install the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1.

The TweetCraft installer will fail if it cannot find your installation of World of Warcraft. If this happens, try

Running World of Warcraft as an administrator (right-click, run as administrator) - this should create/update the Warcraft registry key

Login/Logout and exit the game

Run the TweetCraft installer again

Pre-requisites required for TweetCraft may take a long time to install if your machine does not already have them installed.

On rare occasions, an image for a Twitter user may not show up. This is likely due to the timing of a UI reload. Either reloading the UI or exiting Warcraft completely and re-entering will fix the issue.

Some very narrow images may appear stretched. The reason for this is that Warcraft requires images to be exactly equal width and height and so the TweetCraft image processing may need to stretch a tall but thin pitch such that it appears stretched.

Running the TweetCraft Settings option the first time may take 10 seconds before the Window is painted

After putting your PC in Sleep or Hibernate mode, the TweetCraft Windows client may show a balloon tip that Tweets could not be retrieved. This is normal and to be expected.

Occasionally the Twitter service will be down and you really cannot send/receive Tweets.

Since TweetCraft will only send and receive text Tweets when a Reload UI is done, queued Tweets will not be sent until you reload the UI. What this means is that your "Logged in" AutoTweet message may not be sent until you hearth hours later. To fix this, click the "Refresh" button when you want your Tweets to be sent. Note that Screenshot Tweets will be sent immediately and do not require you to reload the UI.

Anything beyond this, please add it to the Issue Tracker

Updated Wiki: Known Issues

Cannot resolve image macro, invalid image name or id. Curse users click here! | Frequently Asked Questions | Step-by-Step Installation Instructions | In-Game Help | Known Issues | Extending TweetCraft
Note that Screenshot Tweets will be sent immediately and do not require you to reload the UI.
